Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

It was an exciting week for our seventh grade science classes, who got to experience the hatching of our chicks! We currently have 9 chicks who have hatched and are living in Ms. Frick’s classroom until they are able to be relocated to our chicken coop, which will be installed in the coming weeks. Our students have enjoyed our “Chick Cam” livestream, which has allowed them to observe the chicks throughout the school day! Make sure you ask your student about the chicks this weekend!

Here is the link to the "Chick Cam." It is up and running.

Remember that, due to primary voting in the state of Virginia, Tuesday, March 5th is a teacher holiday and staff will be working remotely. Please plan accordingly! Monday and Wednesday will both be even days, following the schedule we shared at the beginning of the school year.

Have a great weekend!

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

It was another great week of learning at Key MS! Our students continue to master new content and skills as they progress through the third quarter. We had our STEM Fair Thursday evening, with students collaborating with teachers and professional engineers on a STEM competition. This was a great event that allowed for positive community engagement and problem-based learning experiences for our students.

Next week, many of our students will participate in WIDA testing, so there will be some modifications to our usual schedule. Your student has been notified when they are testing. Our teachers are prepared to provide additional flexibility and support to ensure all students are able to stay on pace with course requirements even if they have to miss classes for testing. If you do have any questions, you can always reach out to individual teachers or your student’s counselor. More information about both of these topics are included below!

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key families,

It was another exciting week at Key MS, filled with fun and celebration. Wednesday was Valentine’s Day, and our students had a wonderful time distributing candy to our kiss and ride families and bus drivers, as well as purchasing candy from the SCA to share with friends and teachers. We celebrated National School Resource Officer Day, and showed our appreciation for Officer Rivera, who is an essential member of the Key MS team and works tirelessly to ensure our school and community are safe every day.

Finally, today we celebrate the students who earned all As or Bs in all classes in the second quarter in our Honor Roll ceremony. Over 250 students earned this recognition and were invited to attend the ceremony – that’s a whopping 35% of our student body. I say it frequently, but this week, I am especially proud of our students, and you should be as well! Remember that Monday is President’s Day, and that school is closed. Enjoy the long weekend and maybe a little snow tomorrow!

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Lexia Night

📚 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Register to attend or submit a question in advance. Unable to attend in person? Join on Zoom

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Coming Soon: Lightspeed Classroom Management Tool

In the coming weeks, our school will be introducing a new classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. The new tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

Our second semester is off to a great start. Our students received new schedules and have started new electives this week. I’m happy to report that students have acclimated well and are already thriving in their new classes! I am very proud of them and am excited for them to experience another great semester of learning.

This month, Key MS is celebrating Black History Month along with many other schools across FCPS. This year’s theme is African Americans and the Arts. This means we will focus particularly on celebrating Black Americans in the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary arts, and other forms of cultural expression where the African American and Black American influence has been significant. We are excited to provide students with learning experiences related to the rich history and important cultural contributions of Black Americans. If you would like to learn more about Black History Month, you can find information on the FCPS website or BlackHistoryMonth.gov.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Opioid Awareness

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Visit the FCPS website for more information.

Key Middle School Families

Dear Parents and Guardians:

We are aware of conversations that are happening in our community among students and families suggesting a possible threat to Key Middle School in connection with a situation that happened yesterday at Lewis High School. Please know that the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority. After a thorough investigation in cooperation with Lewis HS, FCPS Security, and the Fairfax County Police Department, we have determined that there was no reported or known threat to Key MS. We will always communicate with you should there be a situation at our school that requires your response.

To clear up any further misinformation, please see the message below that was sent last night to Lewis High School families:

1/29/24

Dear Families,

I wanted to follow up to my message this morning regarding the Schoology post that caused concern to our community. An investigation quickly identified the student responsible for the post and concluded that the student did not plan to act on the threat, and that there are no related safety concerns for our school. Appropriate disciplinary action is being taken.

We are thankful to all who reported this post to us. The safety of our students is our primary concern, and we will always investigate these incidents as soon as we are made aware. The first step that you should take if your child shares a safety concern with you is to contact authorities.

If your safety concern is an emergency, please call 911. FCPS Office of Safety and Security also has a safety tip line that you can access anonymously online, by text or by phone.

We look forward to seeing our Lancers tomorrow morning.

Please take the time to speak with your child about the seriousness of threats and the importance of reporting suspicious activities, threats or disturbing information to a trusted adult. Students also need to be reminded that they should not share rumors on social media. If they have concerns, they should speak to a trusted adult. Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please call the school office.

I appreciate your continued support of a safe learning environment for our students.

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell
