Key Middle School Families Fairfax County Youth Survey

Adjusted information for Key MS:

The survey will be administered at Key Middle School on January 7, 2025 and January 8, 2025. The letter below is still accurate other than the dates the students will take the survey at Key Middle School.

Dr. Michelle C. Reid, Superintendent 8115 Gatehouse Road Falls Church, Virginia 22042 October 7, 2024

Dear Parent or Guardian of Student in Grades 8, 10, or 12:

The Fairfax County Youth Survey, a collaboration between the Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is a comprehensive, anonymous, and voluntary survey given each year to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12. The survey examines behaviors, experiences, and other factors that influence the health and well-being of Fairfax County's youth. The results, published each year at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/youthsurvey, identify trends and areas of need, providing a snapshot of the county's youth and serving as a barometer of the community's effectiveness in fostering healthy choices in young people.

Fairfax County Public Schools has been administering the Youth Survey since 2001, with the sixth-grade survey developed for administration in 2008. The majority of the questions currently on the survey were selected from nationally recognized surveys, including the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey through the National Institute of Health. Millions of students across the country have taken these surveys since YRBSS began surveying youth in 1991 and MTF began in 1975. Using questions from these national surveys helps to ensure that the county has national comparisons to use as a benchmark. It also ensures that the questions measure what they are intended to measure, as the questions meet scientific standards of reliability and validity. Mechanisms are also incorporated to detect invalid responses to survey questions and several internal reliability checks help identify falsified answers.

The Youth Survey is conducted electronically during school hours, during one class period, and is offered in eight languages. It is completely anonymous, and responses cannot be traced back to your child's personal information or linked to a computer, e-mail address, or other electronic identifiers. No personally identifiable information or IP addresses are recorded. Survey responses are stored in a secure server which is compliant with federal data security standards.

To further protect students' anonymity, the responses are read and analyzed only by the researchers and summarized in a report with no personal identifiers. All results are presented at a group, or aggregate, level.

The Fairfax County Youth Survey asks questions about risky behavior, mental health, physical health, and safety, including questions about drug use, bullying, and depression. Students are also asked about the positive aspects of their lives and activities, as well as specific protective factors concerning health and safety, including participating in extracurricular activities. Building protective factors can help young people be more resilient.

Some questions that may be considered sensitive, such as questions regarding suicide, sexual behavior, and transgender status, are included in recognition of the importance of these topics and are presented in a straightforward and sensitive manner. These questions are asked ONLY of students in eighth, tenth, and twelfth grade, as sixth-grade students take a shortened, modified survey. In addition, there is no evidence that asking students about health risk behaviors will encourage them to attempt those behaviors. In fact, there are studies that provide evidence that asking sensitive questions such as these may actually reduce the likelihood of engaging in these behaviors.

County, school, and community-based organizations rely on the Youth Survey results to assess youth needs and strengths, develop programs, monitor trends, measure countywide outcomes, and guide countywide planning of prevention efforts. The survey is also an important tool for measuring student achievement goals related to essential life skills and responsibility to the community. Most importantly, the survey gives parents, youth, and community members a sense of our challenges and our strengths and how to build upon those strengths.

You have the right to preview the survey and may deny permission for your child to participate, if you desire. If you choose not to have your child participate, your child will be assigned an alternative activity during the survey administration. Additionally, if at any time a student is uncomfortable with any question on the survey, the student may skip that question or may elect to discontinue the survey entirely.

The survey will be administered between November 12 and November 22, 2024, during a time of day determined by your child's school administration. A copy of the survey will be available to parents and/or guardians online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safetyandwellness/youth-survey October 11, 2024.

While it is our hope that as many students as possible will participate, if you do not wish for your child to take part in the Youth Survey, please complete the form attached below and return it to your child's school counselor no later than November 8, 2024. If you have already opted your child out of this survey using the Parental Digital Consent Portal you do not need to complete the attached form.

If you have questions about the Youth Survey, please contact Bethany Demers, Student Mental Health Specialist, at 571-423-4878. MCR/bd

They were also invited to make gratitude boxes in our library maker space as a way to say thanks to a friend, teacher, or staff member. Little moments like these are powerful reminders of why I am so thankful for this opportunity to serve as the proud principal of Key MS. I am grateful to get to share this time with our students and to be a part of such a positive and inspiring community. I hope you are able to enjoy some quality time with family and friends over the holiday weekend. On behalf of the entire Key MS staff, Happy Thanksgiving!

Student Testing

The Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) require schools to provide reading and mathematics screening tests for all students in grades 6-8. These assessments also fulfill a requirement for reading and mathematics growth assessments under the Virginia Assessment Program (VAP). Test results help families and teachers know how to support each student’s learning and development. The Academic Screening, Growth, and Diagnostic Tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/academic-screening-growth-and-diagnostic-tests) provides more information on these tests.

  • iReady Reading - all students scheduled to take the spring reading SOL
  • MAP Growth MAP – all students scheduled to take a spring math SOL

Middle school teachers assess all grade 6-8 middle school students with iReady Reading and MAP Growth MAP in fall, winter, and spring. Tests are delivered within the classroom instructional block. Teachers set specific testing dates for each class. General timing for required screening and growth is available on the Grade Level Tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/academics/student-tests-assessments/grade-level-tests).

Based on academic screening results, some students may require a reading plan or math intervention plan. Some students may require additional diagnostic tests to help teachers determine specific areas for support. If you have questions about academic screening, growth, or diagnostic tests, please contact your student’s teacher or Danielle Danz, [email protected], the school's test coordinator

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

This was an eventful week at Key MS! Earlier in the week, many of our students participated in the World Language Credit Exam, which is an opportunity for students fluent in a language other than English to demonstrate their level of proficiency and earn high school credits. Kudos to all students who participated!

We ended the week with a visit from author Dr. Marc Aronson, who spoke with our students about nonfiction writing, and then held workshops with our staff on how to incorporate engaging nonfiction texts in their classes. Dr. Aronson’s speaking aims to inspire young people to ask thoughtful questions and discover new answers in the world around them. Our students enjoyed learning about Dr. Aronson, his work, and his passion for history, writing, and understanding our world. You can learn more about Dr. Aronson at his website: www.marcaronson.com, and I encourage you to ask your student what they thought of his message!

I hope you enjoyed your weekend,

Drew Campbell

Junior Achievement Finance Park

All of our 8th grade students had an amazing experience participating in Finance Park. Students were given a "real life" job and family status and learned to budget and manage their money and resources in a hands on interactive experience.

Be sure to ask your 8th graders what they learned through this experience. A special thank you goes out to our social studies department, staff and parent volunteers for making this opportunity possible for our kids.

The FCPS Family Vision Group (FVG) is preparing for its second year of the FCPS Family Connection Group (FCG) initiative. We are looking for at least two parents to represent Key MS on the Family Vision Group.

This program aims to foster a collaborative environment where families can engage directly with Dr. Michelle Reid, the Superintendent of FCPS, on issues that impact student success. The FCPS FVG also seeks to recognize and strengthen the positive impact of community engagement on student achievement. Bi-monthly meetings from August 2024 - May 2025 will ensure consistent school representation and encourage open communication through Q&A sessions and feedback opportunities to help participants inform other families at their schools.

Key responsibilities of the FCPS FCG Include:

  • Actively participate in the exchange of information and perspectives.
  • Commit to pursuing the interest of every student in FCPS.
  • Regularly attend FCPS FVG meetings.

If you would like to be part of this effort, please submit your application using the following link: https://forms.gle/qQybjhykWHMUMQ1T7.  If approved, you will receive further information on the meetings' dates, times, and locations.

Federal Impact Aid Survey

Attention FCPS Families!

The Federal Impact Aid Survey is now available to complete online.

The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify:

  • Military families.
  • Federally connected families.
  • Families living on a military base.

Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the enrolling parent can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form.

For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.

Step 1: CLICK HERE to be taken to SIS ParentVUE. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter.

Step 2: After you’ve logged into your ParentVue Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets’.

Step 3: Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button on the bottom of the page. This will take you to the Impact Aid Survey for you to complete.

If you have multiple children in Fairfax County Public Schools, please fill out a form for each child. You will know you have completed all of the forms when you get to the final page, and see a green check next to each of their names.

Reading and Math Screening Tests

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) require schools to provide reading and mathematics screening tests for all students in grades 6-8.

  • Students took the iReady Reading screener in September
  • MAP Growth Math screener is scheduled October 21-25 for all students

Middle school teachers assess all grade 6-8 students in the fall with iReady Reading and MAP Growth Math. Tests are delivered within the classroom instructional block. Teachers set specific testing dates for each class. General timing for required screening and growth is available on the Grade Level Tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/academics/student-tests-assessments/grade-level-tests).

Winter and spring retests are required for students scheduled for spring SOL 6-8 Math and Reading tests. Retests provide additional growth data to guide instruction. Students scheduled for SOL Algebra 1, Geometry, or Algebra 2 tests will retest with MAP Growth Math if they score below benchmark or if additional growth data is needed for the student.

Based on academic screening results, some students may require a reading plan or math intervention plan. Some students may require additional diagnostic tests to help teachers determine specific areas for support. If you have questions about academic screening, growth, or diagnostic tests, please contact your student’s teacher or the school's test coordinator-Danielle Danz [email protected].

Title I Parent Advisory Committee

Patriot Community-

This is a friendly reminder that we need a Title I Parent Advisory Committee representative for your school ASAP. Please email Debbie Vel ([email protected]) if you are interested in supporting Key MS in this capacity.

The representative should be a parent who is able to attend each meeting and relay important information back to the school. This is also a great opportunity to advocate for any resources our school may need. Meetings will be held in a hybrid format, so our representative can attend either virtually or in person once a month.

You may also complete this google form if you would like to sign up.

Meeting dates are listed below, and they will take place from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.

  • October 22, 2024

  • March 18, 2025
  • April 22, 2025

Superintendent's Family Connection Group

Invitation to Apply

The FCPS Family Vision Group (FVG) is preparing for its second year of the FCPS Family Connection Group (FCG) initiative. We are looking for at least two parents to represent Key MS on the Family Vision Group.

This program aims to foster a collaborative environment where families can engage directly with Dr. Michelle Reid, the Superintendent of FCPS, on issues that impact student success. The FCPS FVG aims to bring diverse communities together to discuss how to achieve the goals of the 2023-2030 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes excellence, equity, and opportunity for all students.

  • Serve as an ambassador to your school community by sharing information between families and the superintendent.
  • Support the superintendent's outreach efforts to engage families and community members.

The FVG seeks committed family members/caregivers who reflect the diverse FCPS student community, from Pre-K through post-secondary education. If you would like to be part of this effort, please submit your application using the following link: https://forms.gle/qQybjhykWHMUMQ1T7.  If approved, you will receive further information on the meetings' dates, times, and locations.

Thank you for your continued support of our mission to improve the educational experience for each FCPS student! By working together, we can cultivate a welcoming school community where every family feels empowered and has a voice.
