Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

We braved the cold at Key MS, and even though there was no snow this week, there was an absolute flurry of positive goings on around our campus! We saw many of our students participate in the Spelling Bee for a chance to compete at the district level, and yesterday, we hosted our 3rd annual STEM Event, in which students work collaboratively with Key MS staff and local engineers to participate in a hands-on bridge building STEM competition. Finally, this morning, we celebrated the outstanding academic achievement of students who earned all As or all As and Bs for the second quarter in our honor roll ceremony. We are very proud of all of our students for their involvement in these exciting opportunities and more!

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Key MS Spelling Bee 2025

Thank you to our students, staff, and families who participated in this year's Spelling Bee. It was a wonderful and competitive event. We look forward to our winner representing Key MS in the district wide Spelling Bee.

3rd Annual Key MS STEM Event 2025

Key MS students were working together with engineers to design and build a bridge using popsicle sticks and hot glue.

Students had to map out a plan for building their bridge and work together as a team.

This hands on activity kept students engaged and focused on the task at hand.

The engineers helped to guide the process, while letting the students do the "heavy lifting" of designing and building the bridge.

Congrats to our team with the winning bridge!

Thank you so much to our 25 volunteer engineers from The American Council of Engineering Companies of Metropolitan Washington (ACECMW) for working with our Key MS students and staff.

Ramadan

Friday, February 28 marks the beginning of Ramadan, a month that is observed by a large number of students, families, and staff in the Key community.

In alignment with FCPS regulations and expectations, Key MS ensures that students and staff of all religious backgrounds have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school building. Students whose religious beliefs require them to pray at a specific time that coincides with instructional time can be accommodated with written parental permission. Additionally, we provide an alternate location during all lunches for students who are fasting and don’t want to be in the cafeteria during that time.

To provide permission for your child, please complete this form. If you cannot access the form, please provide written permission to the main office.

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

Welcome to the spring semester of school year 2024-25! It’s hard to believe that January has already come and gone! Between the weather and the holidays, the month really flew by. Our new semester began on Thursday and students received new schedules.

Please take a moment to review these schedule changes and familiarize yourself with their new classes and teachers. Schoology and ParentVUE are updated with these changes so you will be able to see course information and communicate with these new teachers right away, should the need arise. We also encourage you to ask your Key MS Patriot what they think of their new courses! They’ve been in new classes once and will have some insight as to what to expect in the coming months!

We are looking forward to a great semester of learning ahead. As always, thank you for your partnership in this middle school journey.

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Principal, Key MS

Safe and Welcoming Environment for All

FCPS Trust Policy

On April 28, 2022, the School Board voted to adopt the Trust Policy which affirmed our commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all students and their families. This policy aligns FCPS policy with Fairfax County Government’s Public Trust and Confidentiality Policy. This policy ensures that students and families can access the division’s benefits and services without fear of information being disclosed, directly or indirectly, to federal immigration officials.

At the following link, you will find a copy of the Trust Policy’s One Pager highlights of the responsibilities for the Trust Policy . Information regarding this policy can be found here: www.fcps.edu/trustpolicy.

Academic Advising for 25-26 School Year!

7th Grade Students & Families:

The 7th graders received the Rising 8th Grade Course Presentations on January 14 and January 15.  Students were given course preference sheets during the presentations that are to be kept in their school wide binder.  Please be sure to review your student’s course preference sheet with them.

Please also direct your student to visit the Student Services Schoology page.  Within the Schoology page is a Rising 8th grade folder that holds a host of Academic Advising resources.  Please encourage them to complete the Elective Course Form by 2:30pm on Wednesday, January 29th.  The planning tool, along with the course preference form will help the counselors work most effectively with your student when choosing classes for the upcoming school year.

8th Grade Students & Families:

This week 8th grade counselors began meeting with students to choose their 9th grade classes. Our goal is to complete Academic Advising by February 14th, however this may be extended due to the weather delays.

The course selections will be available to view on schoology.  Once your student has met with their counselor, we encourage you to go over their selections.  Please email your students counselor if you would like to make a change to their selections.  If your student has not met with their counselor yet, we encourage them to look on the student services schoology page, in the riding 9th grade folder, for further resources!

Family Engagement Policy and Compact

For the News You Choose, we have to share our Family Engagement Compact and provide parents with an opportunity for feedback. Here is the preamble to the document that you can adapt for the blurb:

Key Middle School is a Title I school within Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) and utilizes the Title I grant to improve student achievement and help all students meet the objectives of the FCPS Program of Studies and the Virginia Standards of Learning. A partnership with families is essential to meeting this goal.

Under Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, schools that receive Title I funds are expected to collaborate with families to develop and maintain a parent and family engagement policy that describes the school’s approach to involve families in students’ learning and includes a compact expressing the partnerships among staff, caregivers, and students to reach high academic goals for every student.

Key Middle School jointly developed this policy and compact with members of the school community and adopted it for the 2024-2025 school year. Several of the provisions specifically address state or federal expectations for the policy and compact.

This policy and compact is distributed to all caregivers in a language that families can understand. Caregivers have opportunities to provide comments and feedback on the policy and compact through regular communication with the school and participation in family events. Comments are submitted with the school’s policy and compact to FCPS central offices and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). This policy and compact are made available to the broader school community through the school website.

Here is the link to the Family Engagement Compact on our website.

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

I hope you enjoyed a restful and pleasant winter break. We were excited to welcome our students back to school today, and I know you are eager for them to return as well. Our custodial staff has been working tirelessly to make sure our facilities are ready to welcome students and staff back.

In the event of another 2-hour delay on a future date, our school day will begin at 9:30 am. Doors will open to students at 9:10 am, and breakfast will be served. It is possible that there may be longer-than-usual waits for Kiss and Ride and that buses may experience delays. Please plan accordingly. FCPS does have an app that allows you to track your student’s bus called “Here Comes the Bus”; you can find information about downloading the app and setting up your account here.

Here are some important events and dates to keep in mind in the coming weeks:

  • Lewis HS counselors are meeting with 8th graders on Friday (1/10/25) and Monday (1/13/25).

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

I hope you enjoyed a restful and pleasant winter break. We are excited to welcome our students back to school, and I know you are eager for them to return as well. Our custodial staff has been working tirelessly to make sure our facilities are ready to welcome students and staff back. Please ensure your students are dressed warmly for this winter weather upon our return.

In the event of a 2-hour delay, either tomorrow or on a future date, our school day will begin at 9:30 am.

  • Lewis HS counselors were scheduled to meet with 8th graders this week. We are coordinating with the Lewis HS staff to reschedule. Stay tuned for more information!
  • 1/14 and 1/15: 8th graders will take the FCPS Youth Survey in their Health and PE classes

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Middle School Families,

As the holiday season approaches, I want to express my sincere gratitude for the privilege of partnering with you in the education of your children. It has been a pleasure to witness the growth and development of our students this year, and I am incredibly proud of their accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom.

The dedication and support of our parents, guardians, and caretakers are invaluable to the success of our school. Your active involvement in your child's education, from attending school events to helping them with their schoolwork, creates a positive and enriching learning environment for all.

I wish you and your families a joyous and restful holiday break filled. Please remember to prioritize safety and well-being during this festive time.

We look forward to welcoming our students back to school refreshed and ready to learn in the new year.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide.

Key MS - News You Choose - Message to Key MS Families - Use of Racial Slurs

Key Middle School Families

12/18/2024

Dear Key Middle School families:

We are seeing an uptick in the use of racial slurs and insults, both verbal and written, in separate incidents on our campus recently. Administration has begun investigating and will take appropriate action in accordance with the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R).

We want to be clear that Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and Key Middle School do not tolerate this kind of behavior in our schools. It is unacceptable that any student in our school feels that this is appropriate behavior. This is not the kind of school community we seek to cultivate. We want to send a clear message that we denounce these actions and any hate speech or gestures towards any groups or individuals, even when used casually and socially.

It is important in your conversations with your child at home that you remind them that FCPS does not tolerate hate speech and racist language in our schools.  Please encourage students to tell a trusted adult when they hear or see anything that does not support our commitment to a safe learning environment.

Below are two resources that could help guide your conversations at home:

Our students can make a difference in this world by learning to embrace and value our differences instead of using them to divide us. We continue to welcome the opportunity to partner with you on ways to make Key Middle School a welcoming and culturally responsive environment for all. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our administration.

Sincerely,

Key MS Administrative Team
