Principal's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

It looks like it is going to be a beautiful Memorial Day weekend! I hope everyone is able to enjoy some time with family and friends while getting a little extra rest and relaxation on the holiday. We are starting to count down the days until the end of the year, but we still have many great goings on at Key! This week, our music programs held their spring concert. The event was extremely well-attended and a wonderful showcase for our student musicians. Kudos to all involved for a great performance! We also celebrated five of our students who became published authors this week! Through their language arts classes, these students wrote children’s stories which have been published. It was wonderful celebrating their accomplishments alongside families, friends, and teachers. Enjoy your weekend, and we look forward to entering June and the homestretch of the school year next week!

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

SOL Parent/Guardian Permission to Retest Form

The Virginia Board of Education allows elementary and middle school students who fail their spring Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year. Retesting is available when a student fails their first SOL attempt with a score of 375-399. (A score of 400 is considered passing for SOL tests.) Note that retests are not offered for fall or winter Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) tests.

Parent/guardian permission is required for the school to retest any student in grades 3-8. If you believe that your student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the spring SOL test, please complete this Google permission form.   A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your student’s course grade or academic record.

Health Room Medication

Parent or Guardian:

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over the counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must be completed. Part I must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be signed and dated by your health care provider. Approved over-the-counter medications given for headaches, muscle aches, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps do not need a health care provider’s signature. Antibiotic or antiviral medications for 10 consecutive school days or less do not require a health care provider’s signature either. For all asthma medications, a Virginia Asthma Action Plan must be provided. More detailed information is available on the back of the medication authorization form(s).

Over-the-counter medication must be in the unopened original container and clearly labeled by the parent or guardian. No more than 100 pills/tablets of OTC medication should be brought to school at a time. All prescription medication, including samples, must be labeled by the pharmacist or health care provider. Please make sure that the label clearly states your student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage of the medication, and the time to be given.

Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student, their medication. If you have any questions, please contact your school health room aide, at 703-313-3910.

Thank you for your cooperation.

🏃‍♀️ Middle School Athletics Coming This Fall

FCPS has designated funding in the budget for 2023-24 for middle school spring and fall athletic activities to support student well-being at no cost to students. Pending budget adoption, this will be the first time FCPS has offered middle school students a chance to participate in extracurricular sports programs.

Middle schools will start with cross country this fall. Track will follow in spring 2024.

Any middle school students who would like to participate in athletics will need to have a Virginia High School League (VHSL) pre-participation examination (PPE). The physical exam form must be completed and signed by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant. Fairfax County public high schools will offer PPEs at a cost of $50 per student through June 17. Students who receive free or reduced meals are eligible to receive an exam at no cost. Learn more about PPE and middle school athletics.

Update Contact Information in [email protected]

Within SIS ParentVUE, Fairfax County Public Schools provides [email protected] (weCare), an emergency care information system. weCare helps manage contact and emergency medical information by allowing parents/caregivers to enter and update their children’s data online.

That contact information automatically enrolls parents/caregivers to receive critical updates from the district and their child’s school through the eNotify system. FCPS uses eNotify to communicate emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closing and delay, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent by email, text, and occasionally by phone. Principal's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

It was another great week at Key MS! Our students completed both their Reading and Math SOL exams this week, so it was definitely a rigorous week for them! Our teachers have been hard at work ensuring students feel prepared for these exams, and the hard work is paying off: I spoke with several students today who told me they felt really confident about their performance. Please congratulate your students for all their efforts at school this week. We have tried to balance out the week with some less stressful activities, including chalk art created by students during recess and continued practice for our Battle of the Books team! Next week, we will begin our remediation efforts for all students eligible for SOL retests, so look out for information about that if your student is eligible. I hope you have been enjoying this beautiful May weather and have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Principal's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

Our teachers and staff have worked hard all year to ensure our students felt excited and confident for SOL exams, which kicked off this week. To gear up for this strenuous stretch of the year, we had our “Rock the Test, Stress Less” event during Tuesday’s Learning Seminars, and students and staff participated in a spirit week. Today was Sports Day, and you can see that our leadership team represented their favorite teams. The other theme days were embraced enthusiastically by students and staff. 8th grade students took the Science SOL exam Thursday, and testing continues next week for both 7th and 8th grade students with Reading exams on Wednesday and Math exams on Friday. Please encourage your students to study, get plenty of sleep the night before their test, and to eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the test. We want to ensure all of our students are successful and feel proud of their achievements on these end-of-course exams.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Key MS Families TONIGHT: In-Person PTA Meeting

Key MS PTA Meeting

Tuesday, May 9th @ 7 pm - Key MS Cafeteria

Agenda:

  1. Election of new officers
  2. Meet our new Principal Drew Campbell
  3. Free pizza!

Thanks for a great year at Key Middle School. We had very successful fundraising this school year and have been able to provide Valentine treats for ALL the students, host a free after school dance, show appreciation for our school staff, and invite the community back to campus for some fun events that haven't taken place since the Covid shutdown of 2020.

I have had the privilege to work with a very creative, generous, and committed board this year and last year. I owe a debt of gratitude to our current Vice President Gina Courtney, Treasurer Mary Kay Popeck Snow, and Secretary Mella Aslan. Please thank them when you see them. Our tenure ends with the school year, and it is time to transition.

Please consider serving on the Key MS PTA Board for next year. We are currently looking for nominations and will have elections on May 9. You can also ask friends with rising 7th grade students if they can get involved in the PTA for the 2023-2024 school year. We need family involvement to truly make Key the Place to Be.

The following positions are required for a PTA:

President - Communication with school administrators and overall organization of activities

Treasurer - Keeping track of funds

Secretary - Taking notes at meetings

Please contact me for details of what each position entails. Other positions like Vice President as well as committee chairs are welcome. Many hands make light work of course.

I have met so many interesting, wonderful people through my PTA experiences, and feel that I have made a positive contribution to my children's experience and community. I invite you to contribute to your child's experience in middle school by taking a leadership position with the PTA. Please let me know if you or someone you know is interested in serving on next year's Key MS PTA Board.

Thanks!

Principal's Corner

Greetings Key Families!

We had another amazing week at Key MS! This week, we celebrated our teachers and staff for Teacher Appreciation Week. We delivered breakfast and coffee, handed out Key-branded lunchboxes to all staff, and hosted a pizza party. I want to especially thank our wonderful PTA who provided the staff with a catered lunch on Tuesday. I heard many teachers share that this was a Teacher Appreciation Week for the ages!

Today, we celebrated our 7th and 8th graders who made the All A and A-B Honor Roll. This is quite an achievement, as students must maintain these high averages across all classes for the entire school year. Both Mr. Brown and Ms. Tillman shared powerful words of wisdom with the student body. Kudos to all students who worked hard to earn this achievement!

Finally, the cast and crew of James and the Giant Peach had their opening performance for our after-school performance yesterday afternoon. It was a sold-out show, with students and staff staying after to see the show. Everyone was raving about how fun the show is, and what a great job our students did. There are additional performances tonight and tomorrow at 6:30. We hope to see you there!

Have a great weekend!

SOL's

SOLs are fast approaching. Below are our planned testing days for our students. Students should bring their charged FCPS laptop, their charger, a pencil, and a book to read to all testing sessions. All electronic devices (phones) will need to be turned off and stored in the student’s backpack or turned into the teacher in the testing room. Electronic watches are not allowed as well.

Grade

              SOL Content Areas (Spring)

7

              Reading (May 17)

              Math (May 19)

8

              Science (May 11)

              Reading (May 17)

              Math (May 19)

Students will do their best if they get a good night’s rest and eat breakfast.  Please avoid appointments on the testing days so we can ensure all students take their required tests.  We have a spirit week next week to pump up the students to do their best on their SOLs.  We hope your student enjoys the fun leading up to the tests.

Mentor-Mentee Kickball Game

We'd like to thank all of the students and staff who participated in our Annual Key MS Mentor-Mentee Kickball Game. It was a great turn out and a great time was had by all.

April:

  • National School Library Month

Let's all be kind to one another.

Principal's Corner

Greetings Key Families!

We had another outstanding week at Key MS. This week was especially exciting because we had our annual MWEE field trip! This experience immerses students in nature to give them a real-world learning experience about the impact of the Chesapeake Bay area watershed on our ecosystem! Students receive instruction and participate in demonstration from students and staff from George Mason University, and they get to have some fun exploring riverbanks and other outdoor spaces. We absolutely lucked out that the rain held off until Friday! We also hosted our annual Mentor-Mentee kickball game. This after-school event celebrates the success of our mentorship program, and students play alongside their mentors in a friendly game of kickball. The event was extremely well attended, and I got to join in the fun as a switch kicker! It was a fun way to meet many new Key students!

Next week, our school play opens. The play is James and the Giant Peach, and our students and staff are hard at work to make sure it is ready for opening night on Friday, May 5. There will also be a special presentation to our student body who want to stay after on Thursday, May 4th. I hope you consider attending one of our performances! I will be there on opening night and am looking forward to meeting many of you there.

Stay dry this weekend!

Learn more about updating your emergency care information.
