Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Middle School Families,

As the holiday season approaches, I want to express my sincere gratitude for the privilege of partnering with you in the education of your children. It has been a pleasure to witness the growth and development of our students this year, and I am incredibly proud of their accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom.

The dedication and support of our parents, guardians, and caretakers are invaluable to the success of our school. Your active involvement in your child's education, from attending school events to helping them with their schoolwork, creates a positive and enriching learning environment for all.

I wish you and your families a joyous and restful holiday break filled. Please remember to prioritize safety and well-being during this festive time.

We look forward to welcoming our students back to school refreshed and ready to learn in the new year.

Sincerely,

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide.

Family Engagement Policy and Compact

For the News You Choose, we have to share our Family Engagement Compact and provide parents with an opportunity for feedback. Here is the preamble to the document that you can adapt for the blurb:

Key Middle School is a Title I school within Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) and utilizes the Title I grant to improve student achievement and help all students meet the objectives of the FCPS Program of Studies and the Virginia Standards of Learning. A partnership with families is essential to meeting this goal.

Under Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, schools that receive Title I funds are expected to collaborate with families to develop and maintain a parent and family engagement policy that describes the school’s approach to involve families in students’ learning and includes a compact expressing the partnerships among staff, caregivers, and students to reach high academic goals for every student.

Key Middle School jointly developed this policy and compact with members of the school community and adopted it for the 2024-2025 school year. Several of the provisions specifically address state or federal expectations for the policy and compact.

This policy and compact is distributed to all caregivers in a language that families can understand. Caregivers have opportunities to provide comments and feedback on the policy and compact through regular communication with the school and participation in family events. Comments are submitted with the school’s policy and compact to FCPS central offices and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). This policy and compact are made available to the broader school community through the school website.

Key MS - News You Choose - Message to Key MS Families - Use of Racial Slurs

Key Middle School Families

12/18/2024

Dear Key Middle School families:

We are seeing an uptick in the use of racial slurs and insults, both verbal and written, in separate incidents on our campus recently. Administration has begun investigating and will take appropriate action in accordance with the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R).

We want to be clear that Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and Key Middle School do not tolerate this kind of behavior in our schools. It is unacceptable that any student in our school feels that this is appropriate behavior. This is not the kind of school community we seek to cultivate. We want to send a clear message that we denounce these actions and any hate speech or gestures towards any groups or individuals, even when used casually and socially.

It is important in your conversations with your child at home that you remind them that FCPS does not tolerate hate speech and racist language in our schools.  Please encourage students to tell a trusted adult when they hear or see anything that does not support our commitment to a safe learning environment.

Below are two resources that could help guide your conversations at home:

Our students can make a difference in this world by learning to embrace and value our differences instead of using them to divide us. We continue to welcome the opportunity to partner with you on ways to make Key Middle School a welcoming and culturally responsive environment for all. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our administration.

Sincerely,

Key MS Administrative Team

FACS Students Bake Holiday Cookies

Our incredible FACS students baked an assortment of cookies for their peers, in an engaging and memorable after-school event. This special event exemplified the values of community involvement and caring, core lessons we are teaching in our current unit. Students joined together to decorate and enjoy the cookies prepared by our talented FACS students. Participation in the event also supported a meaningful cause, with students contributing canned goods that FCCLA will donate to a local food bank, further reinforcing the importance of giving back and strengthening our community bonds. Enjoy! Thank you to our amazing Family and Consumer Science Teacher Yanal Jabour, M.Ed. for making this opportunity possible.

Key MS - News You Choose - Fairfax County Youth Survey

Key Middle School Families Fairfax County Youth Survey

Adjusted information for Key MS:

The survey will be administered at Key Middle School on January 7, 2025 and January 8, 2025. The letter below is still accurate other than the dates the students will take the survey at Key Middle School.

Dr. Michelle C. Reid, Superintendent 8115 Gatehouse Road Falls Church, Virginia 22042 October 7, 2024

Dear Parent or Guardian of Student in Grades 8, 10, or 12:

The Fairfax County Youth Survey, a collaboration between the Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is a comprehensive, anonymous, and voluntary survey given each year to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12. The survey examines behaviors, experiences, and other factors that influence the health and well-being of Fairfax County's youth. The results, published each year at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/youthsurvey, identify trends and areas of need, providing a snapshot of the county's youth and serving as a barometer of the community's effectiveness in fostering healthy choices in young people.

Fairfax County Public Schools has been administering the Youth Survey since 2001, with the sixth-grade survey developed for administration in 2008. The majority of the questions currently on the survey were selected from nationally recognized surveys, including the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey through the National Institute of Health. Millions of students across the country have taken these surveys since YRBSS began surveying youth in 1991 and MTF began in 1975. Using questions from these national surveys helps to ensure that the county has national comparisons to use as a benchmark. It also ensures that the questions measure what they are intended to measure, as the questions meet scientific standards of reliability and validity. Mechanisms are also incorporated to detect invalid responses to survey questions and several internal reliability checks help identify falsified answers.

The Youth Survey is conducted electronically during school hours, during one class period, and is offered in eight languages. It is completely anonymous, and responses cannot be traced back to your child's personal information or linked to a computer, e-mail address, or other electronic identifiers. No personally identifiable information or IP addresses are recorded. Survey responses are stored in a secure server which is compliant with federal data security standards.

To further protect students' anonymity, the responses are read and analyzed only by the researchers and summarized in a report with no personal identifiers. All results are presented at a group, or aggregate, level.

The Fairfax County Youth Survey asks questions about risky behavior, mental health, physical health, and safety, including questions about drug use, bullying, and depression. Students are also asked about the positive aspects of their lives and activities, as well as specific protective factors concerning health and safety, including participating in extracurricular activities. Building protective factors can help young people be more resilient.

Some questions that may be considered sensitive, such as questions regarding suicide, sexual behavior, and transgender status, are included in recognition of the importance of these topics and are presented in a straightforward and sensitive manner. These questions are asked ONLY of students in eighth, tenth, and twelfth grade, as sixth-grade students take a shortened, modified survey. In addition, there is no evidence that asking students about health risk behaviors will encourage them to attempt those behaviors. In fact, there are studies that provide evidence that asking sensitive questions such as these may actually reduce the likelihood of engaging in these behaviors.

County, school, and community-based organizations rely on the Youth Survey results to assess youth needs and strengths, develop programs, monitor trends, measure countywide outcomes, and guide countywide planning of prevention efforts. The survey is also an important tool for measuring student achievement goals related to essential life skills and responsibility to the community. Most importantly, the survey gives parents, youth, and community members a sense of our challenges and our strengths and how to build upon those strengths.

You have the right to preview the survey and may deny permission for your child to participate, if you desire. If you choose not to have your child participate, your child will be assigned an alternative activity during the survey administration. Additionally, if at any time a student is uncomfortable with any question on the survey, the student may skip that question or may elect to discontinue the survey entirely.

The survey will be administered between November 12 and November 22, 2024, during a time of day determined by your child's school administration. A copy of the survey will be available to parents and/or guardians online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safetyandwellness/youth-survey October 11, 2024.

While it is our hope that as many students as possible will participate, if you do not wish for your child to take part in the Youth Survey, please complete the form attached below and return it to your child's school counselor no later than November 8, 2024. If you have already opted your child out of this survey using the Parental Digital Consent Portal you do not need to complete the attached form.

If you have questions about the Youth Survey, please contact Bethany Demers, Student Mental Health Specialist, at 571-423-4878. MCR/bd

11/12/2024- 11/22/2024 #25294

Sincerely,

Dr. Michelle C. Reid Superintendent of Schools

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

This week, our students participated in our annual Turkey Trot, a fun run that kicks off the Thanksgiving season. They were also invited to make gratitude boxes in our library maker space as a way to say thanks to a friend, teacher, or staff member. Little moments like these are powerful reminders of why I am so thankful for this opportunity to serve as the proud principal of Key MS. I am grateful to get to share this time with our students and to be a part of such a positive and inspiring community. I hope you are able to enjoy some quality time with family and friends over the holiday weekend. On behalf of the entire Key MS staff, Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Key MS Annual Turkey Trot

We had another successful Turkey Trot with our entire school and many staff members running the one mile course on Monday (11/25/24). The students had the option of competing for the best time or they could have a casual one mile walk with friends. Either way, it was a great opportunity to get some exercise and fresh air during the school day. A huge THANK YOU goes out to our wonderful H/PE department for organizing the Turkey Trot again this year.

Student Testing

The Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) require schools to provide reading and mathematics screening tests for all students in grades 6-8. These assessments also fulfill a requirement for reading and mathematics growth assessments under the Virginia Assessment Program (VAP). Test results help families and teachers know how to support each student’s learning and development. The Academic Screening, Growth, and Diagnostic Tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/academic-screening-growth-and-diagnostic-tests) provides more information on these tests.

  • iReady Reading - all students scheduled to take the spring reading SOL
  • MAP Growth MAP – all students scheduled to take a spring math SOL

Middle school teachers assess all grade 6-8 middle school students with iReady Reading and MAP Growth MAP in fall, winter, and spring. Tests are delivered within the classroom instructional block. Teachers set specific testing dates for each class. General timing for required screening and growth is available on the Grade Level Tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/academics/student-tests-assessments/grade-level-tests).

Based on academic screening results, some students may require a reading plan or math intervention plan. Some students may require additional diagnostic tests to help teachers determine specific areas for support. If you have questions about academic screening, growth, or diagnostic tests, please contact your student’s teacher or Danielle Danz, [email protected], the school's test coordinator

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

This was an eventful week at Key MS! Earlier in the week, many of our students participated in the World Language Credit Exam, which is an opportunity for students fluent in a language other than English to demonstrate their level of proficiency and earn high school credits. Kudos to all students who participated!

We ended the week with a visit from author Dr. Marc Aronson, who spoke with our students about nonfiction writing, and then held workshops with our staff on how to incorporate engaging nonfiction texts in their classes. Dr. Aronson’s speaking aims to inspire young people to ask thoughtful questions and discover new answers in the world around them. Our students enjoyed learning about Dr. Aronson, his work, and his passion for history, writing, and understanding our world. You can learn more about Dr. Aronson at his website: www.marcaronson.com, and I encourage you to ask your student what they thought of his message!

I hope you enjoyed your weekend,

Drew Campbell

Federal Impact Aid Survey

Attention FCPS Families!

The Federal Impact Aid Survey is now available to complete online.

The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify:

  • Military families.
  • Federally connected families.
  • Families living on a military base.

Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the enrolling parent can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form.

For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.

Step 1: CLICK HERE to be taken to SIS ParentVUE. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter.

Step 2: After you’ve logged into your ParentVue Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets’.

Step 3: Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button on the bottom of the page. This will take you to the Impact Aid Survey for you to complete.

If you have multiple children in Fairfax County Public Schools, please fill out a form for each child. You will know you have completed all of the forms when you get to the final page, and see a green check next to each of their names.

Congratulations to our amazing Art teacher, Mr. Robbins, for his display of art at the Workhouse Art Center in Lorton, VA.

Junior Achievement Finance Park

All of our 8th grade students had an amazing experience participating in Finance Park. Students were given a "real life" job and family status and learned to budget and manage their money and resources in a hands on interactive experience.

Be sure to ask your 8th graders what they learned through this experience. A special thank you goes out to our social studies department, staff and parent volunteers for making this opportunity possible for our kids.

Boundary Review

📍 Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Thursday, December 12, 6:45-8:15 p.m., at Annandale High School Cafeteria.

Please visit FCPS’ website for more meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

Middle and High School Clinics

FCPS is partnering with the health department to host immunization clinics at middle and high schools. Clinics will take place during the school day. Students may only participate in the clinic at the school where they are enrolled. Parental/caregiver consent is required for students to receive immunizations.

Please check the Immunization Resources page for clinic locations, dates, and how to submit a consent form.

Sensory Disabilities

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

El Departamento de Educación de Virginia (VDOE) también proporciona información sobre Recursos para apoyar a los estudiantes con discapacidades sensoriales.

Title I Parent Advisory Committee

Patriot Community-

This is a friendly reminder that we need a Title I Parent Advisory Committee representative for your school ASAP. Please email Debbie Vel ([email protected]) if you are interested in supporting Key MS in this capacity.

The representative should be a parent who is able to attend each meeting and relay important information back to the school. This is also a great opportunity to advocate for any resources our school may need. Meetings will be held in a hybrid format, so our representative can attend either virtually or in person once a month.

You may also complete this google form if you would like to sign up.

Meeting dates are listed below, and they will take place from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.

  • December 3, 2024
  • February 11, 2025
  • March 18, 2025
  • April 22, 2025
  • May 20, 2025

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Debbie Vel at [email protected].

Thank you, Key MS Admin Team
