Varsity Tutors Replaces Tutor.com

Varsity Tutors is now providing online tutoring services to FCPS students at no cost to families. It is replacing Tutor.com, which was funded by ESSER through June 30, in conjunction with the end of ESSER funding for school districts nationwide. Low student usage was the primary reason for discontinuing Tutor.com’s services.

Key Messages:

  • After careful consideration, FCPS decided to discontinue our contract with Tutor.com effective June 30, in conjunction with the end of ESSER funding for school districts nationwide, including FCPS.
  • While feedback about Tutor.com had been positive overall, usage among students across FCPS was not high enough to justify the cost to the school district:
    • From the start of SY 2023-24 to April 15, 2024, only 8,400 students used Tutor.com.
    • For SY 2022-23, approximately 12,500 students used the service.
  • Varsity Tutors is now available for 24/7 online tutoring services to FCPS students at no cost to families. Online tutoring is available in English and Spanish. Visit our Varsity Tutors webpage
  • Families may also choose to access Schoolhouse, a free online, peer-to-peer tutoring service for students 13 years old and above. Schoolhouse was founded by Sal Khan of Khan Academy.
  • In addition to online tutoring, FCPS will continue to provide high impact, in-person tutoring to identified students in grades 3-8, funded by the All In Virginia Tutoring Initiative. Schools may contact families of students identified for this program after school begins.
  • As always, we will continue our commitment to ensuring students receive the support they need to reach their greatest potential in school and in life.

New Attendance Reporting Feature Launching in ParentVUE for 2024-25 School Year

FCPS is excited to announce an important update beginning with the start of the 2024-25 school year. Parents and caregivers will have the option to submit their student’s attendance directly through ParentVUE starting the first day of school, August 19, 2024.  This new feature aims to streamline the attendance reporting process and enhance communication between parents and schools. This change will make it more convenient for parents and schools to manage students' attendance while ensuring the highest level of security.

ParentVUE offers a more secure and reliable platform for managing students' attendance information.  ParentVUE will replace the current Attendance Forms, which will be discontinued at the end of the 2023-24 school year.

ParentVUE access and assistance will be provided during Back-to-School events.

Expunging High School Credits

High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA). VA State and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians to make a request to have that course expunged from the student’s record.

Please contact your child's school counselor if you have any questions or to submit the completed Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School Form.

Class Schedules for the 2024-2025 School Year

In preparation for next school year, we would like to set your student up for success! In the spring, students made their course requests for the 2024-2025 school year. Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

Please join me in congratulating Danielle Tillman, who recently accepted a position to serve as assistant principal at Irving MS. Ms. Tillman has proudly served the Key MS community for 13 years as a Health and PE teacher, department chair, dean of students, and most recently, assistant principal. She has had a profound and positive impact on our school, our students, our staff, and our community, and she will be deeply missed. In her farewell remarks to the staff, Ms. Tillman shared that “Key has been my home for 13 years and I have become a teacher, leader, wife, and mom while being a part of the Key family. Key has been more to me than a place I work, Key is my community, my family.” While I know we will all miss Ms. Tillman, I am also confident she will have a similar positive impact on the Irving MS community. We wish her the best in her new position.

A search for a new assistant principal is underway! We will be interviewing candidates in the coming days with the goal of selecting someone to fill this position before the start of the new school year. Once the next assistant principal has been selected, we will send an introduction to the community.

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

It truly was a remarkable year at Key MS! Reflecting on the year, we have so much to celebrate and so much to be proud of our students for accomplishing! The Key MS 2nd Annual STEM event was a huge success with many or our students participating. Our cross country and track programs got new students engaged in competitive sports; our students performed in concerts, plays, and our spring musical, The Descendants; programs like AVID, Young Scholars, and SCA connected our students to leadership, career, and higher education experiences; and we incubated and hatched chickens, who now live in our courtyard! We celebrated our students’ achievement at honor roll ceremonies, excellent attendance parties, and end-of-year awards ceremonies, and their hard work paid off! I’m proud to share with you that we saw improvements in our Algebra, Language Arts, and Science SOL scores, and we reduced our chronic absenteeism rate!

Every day, I feel very fortunate to lead this school and serve this community. It has truly been a privilege and an honor getting to know your students this school year! To families of our rising 8th graders and families who have elementary-aged students coming to us in the future, I look forward to continuing to partner with you to help your students achieve their goals. And to the families of rising 9th graders, we have loved working with your students. Seeing them go is bittersweet, but I know this next step is full of possibility and excitement. On behalf of the Key Middle School team, congratulations and best wishes!

I hope everyone has a wonderful summer! Be safe, have fun, and do great things!

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

No Water Guns in School

Patriot Families-

We have had multiple incidents this week with students using water guns in school. This has caused a significant disruption to the halls as well as created unsafe floor conditions for students and staff. We are also seeing students poke holes in water bottles and spray other students with the water in the bottle. Please remind our students that water guns and spraying water on others is not allowed in school. Hallway safety has been negatively impacted by the presence of water guns in our school. We appreciate your support in making sure that our students are not spraying water during the school day and are not bringing water guns into the school building.

Key MS Staff

Special Opportunity for Attendance Hours

Key Middle School is pleased to offer a special opportunity for students to earn missing attendance hours that are contributing to chronic absenteeism, while also providing valuable academic support. Research consistently shows that regular school attendance and academic success are closely linked. By remaining after school to work with a teacher, your student can improve both.

Whether struggling with specific subjects, aiming to improve their grades, or simply seeking extra practice, our dedicated teachers are here to provide guidance and support. To earn back time, students must stay for a minimum of 3 hours (this needs to spread over multiple days) with an academic teacher.  Arrangements to stay after must be communicated to their teacher in advance.

By participating in this after-school program, students not only have the chance to catch up on missed work but also build a strong academic foundation that will benefit them in the long run. This opportunity to earn back attendance hours after school will end May 30th. We are requesting your parental support, by encouraging your student to take advantage of this valuable resource. Together, we can make a difference in tackling chronic absenteeism and ensuring that every student has the support they need to succeed.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to your students' counselor.

Devices Away for the Day

With SOL exams beginning next week, we wanted to revisit the Key MS personal electronic device policy. Key MS follows the FCPS guideline that personal electronic devices are “away for the day,” meaning students should not be using them at all during the school day. All students are provided with lockers, and we encourage students to store their personal devices in their lockers. At a minimum, we ask that devices be stowed away and silent during the day. This is especially important in testing locations, but it applies to all environments at Key, including non-instructional settings like the halls, cafeteria, bathrooms, and recess locations. If staff notice students using phones or other devices, they are reminded of the expectation and asked to put them away. Repeated infractions can result in the phone being confiscated for the day, parent communication, and even disciplinary consequences. Please speak with your Key MS student about appropriate device use during the school day!

Required Immunizations
  • 🩹 Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine. Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

SEL Screener Results

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s counselor.
