SEL Screener Results

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s counselor.

Eclipse Information

Dear Key MS families,

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

  • Korean: Key MS

Solar Eclipse on April 8
  • ☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Ramadan

Ramadan has begun and many of our students will be fasting and/or participating in prayer during the school day. In alignment with FCPS regulations and expectations, Key MS ensures that students and staff of all religious backgrounds have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school building. The following are the current FCPS guidelines:

  • Our meditation and silent reflection space is located in the auxiliary gym. This is our space for group prayer; students with individual needs and accommodations may access a different location in the main office.  Is the location changes, students and staff will be notified.
  • Students participating in group prayer in the meditation and silent reflection space will be supervised by staff members. If there are safety concerns, other accommodations will be discussed.

Prayer, Meditation, and Silent Reflection during Instructional Time

  • Students whose religious beliefs require them to pray at a specific time that coincides with instructional time can be accommodated with written parental permission. Please use this form to confirm your permission if you would like your student to have access to the prayer room.

Use of Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

Individuals using the space shall abide by the following rules and guidelines:

    • Intended for personal use
    • Respect the rights and beliefs of others
    • Use of the space is voluntary; no one should be compelled to use or participate in activities within the space
    • The SRR applies to all students who use the space.
    • The reflection space is available during the school day during regular hours.
    • Students report to the main office to check in.

If you have any questions about this process, please call the main office at 703-313-3900 and our staff will connect you with an administrator.

Enjoy your weekend!

Important Dates:

April 4: Key MS Town Hall Meeting @ 6pm in the Lecture Hall

April 5: Key MS Town Hall Meeting @ 9:30am in the Lecture Hall

Key MS Town Hall Meetings

Dear Key Middle School Community,

I am pleased to invite you to an informational town hall meeting on Thursday, April 4th at 6:00 PM or our parent coffee on Friday, April 5th at 9:30 AM. Both events will be held in the school’s Lecture Hall. At these meetings, we will go into greater detail about the two new developments for Key MS described below.

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) recently released the schools that have been identified as being in need of support, based on Virginia’s federal accountability system under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Key Middle School is on this list.

These designations are based on a complex set of factors. Our school was identified as being in need of support in math and reading  for students with disabilities. At the town hall and parent coffee, I will explain more about what this designation means, how we have been addressing these gaps, and what additional efforts will be put into place to support students.

I am also excited to share that Key Middle School is now a school designated to receive Federal Title I Grant Funds starting in the 2024-2025 school year.  Title I represents a powerful opportunity to further support the success of all our students.

Title I funding allows us to allocate additional resources to directly impact student achievement. These resources can be used in a variety of ways, including:

  • Implementing innovative educational programs that are geared toward students’ needs to ensure all students reach high expectations.
  • Building strong partnerships with families through developing a family and school engagement policy, including families in the planning of school and family partnership opportunities, and offering a variety of family meetings and experiences.
  • Expanding intervention and enrichment programs.
  • Providing supplemental professional learning experiences for teachers and administrators.
  • Supplying additional high quality instructional materials that will enhance student learning experiences.
  • Additional staffing to support interventions, enrichment, and specific areas of opportunity for the school.

We believe that a strong school community is essential for student success. Leveraging our existing strengths, Title I funding allows us the opportunity to further enrich and enhance a supportive learning environment for all our students. We will be able to provide you with more information about our new Title I designation and answer your questions at the town hall meetings on April 4th and April 5th.

Working together, we can ensure that each and every student at Key Middle School is prepared for a future yet to be imagined. I hope to see you on April 4th or April 5th to share more detailed information and answer any questions you may have about both of these important topics.

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Atentamente,

Congratulations to our Cat B and AVID students and our Theatre Arts teacher, Ms. Promisel, for their wonderful performance of Little Red Riding Hood.

Federal Accountability Standards

Key MS is finally being recognized as a Title I school. This means that we qualify for a federal grant to provide additional staff, support, and programming for our students. These funds will allow us to expand intervention and enrichment opportunities for students, explore new high-quality and evidence-based instructional resources, build strong partnerships with families and communities, and bring on additional support staff to lead critical work related to student achievement. Principal Campbell will host parent town hall meetings to share this information and answer parent questions. These events are for parents, community members, and school staff who want to learn more about the Federal Accountability Standards that come along with the Title I designation.

Town Hall Meeting Schedule:

  • Thursday, April 4 @ 6:00pm in the Key MS Lecture Hall
  • Friday, April 5 @ 9:00am in the Key MS Lecture Hall

Thank you to our Family and Consumer Science teacher, Mrs. Jabour, for hosting a cupcake decorating event. Our students enjoyed decorating and eating the cupcakes!

March:

  • Women's History Month
  • National Reading Month
  • Disability Awareness Month
  • Equity in Education Month

  • National Nutrition Month
  • Daylight Saving Time

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

In less than two weeks, we will have our Spring Fling, an after-school dance to celebrate the end of the 3rd quarter. Tickets will be available for sale ($3 for one ticket, $5 for two) during the school day. Students must maintain good standing to attend the dance. Please encourage your student to attend school every day, arrive to all classes on time, and meeting all behavior expectations. While we hope that all students are able to enjoy this fun extracurricular event, students with suspensions or multiple disciplinary infractions may lose their opportunity to attend the dance. Thank you for your work in reinforcing these expectations at home!

Next week, Ramadan begins and many of our students will be fasting and/or participating in prayer during the school day.

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

It was an exciting week for our seventh grade science classes, who got to experience the hatching of our chicks! We currently have 9 chicks who have hatched and are living in Ms. Frick’s classroom until they are able to be relocated to our chicken coop, which will be installed in the coming weeks. Our students have enjoyed our “Chick Cam” livestream, which has allowed them to observe the chicks throughout the school day! Make sure you ask your student about the chicks this weekend!

Here is the link to the "Chick Cam." It is up and running.

We had success in our fall cross country season, and our kids had fun, learned the values of teamwork, dedication, and perseverance while participating in a competitive, interscholastic sport. If you are interested in being a coach for the Key MS track team, please reach out to Principal Campbell at [email protected].

New Tech Support Feature

Our tech support reporting system has a new feature allowing students to provide feedback to our tech support team. Most students are using this feature responsibly, but we have seen some examples of students using the feature to make jokes or give negative feedback that is not constructive. Since this is a new feature, we would appreciate your support in encouraging students to use is appropriately and intentionally. Thank you!

Inspirigirl - Girls in STEM

Good afternoon,

We hope this email finds you well!

We are the teaching coordinators of Inspirigirl, a nonprofit educational group run by students at Thomas Jefferson High School (TJHSST) that provides free computer science classes, workshops, and events for students with a focus on encouraging girls to participate in computer science.

We will be holding our free Winter 2024 virtual computer science classes throughout February, and we would like to invite your school’s students to register and learn about computer science with us. All students are welcome, and we offer various coding courses for all different age and level groups.

Classes are completely free thanks to our teaching volunteers, and we hope that you can spread the word in your school! Attached is a flyer that can be used to advertise classes, and here is our registration link: linktr.ee/inspirigirl

For your convenience, we have compiled comprehensive information in our Linktree, where you can access details about our classes, our organization's social profiles, and our official website. Thank you so much, and please let us know if you have any questions!

Sincerely,

Inspirigirl Teaching Coordinators

Coming Soon: Lightspeed Classroom Management Tool

In the coming weeks, our school will be introducing a new classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. The new tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please let us know if you have any questions.
