Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

This was an eventful week at Key MS! Earlier in the week, many of our students participated in the World Language Credit Exam, which is an opportunity for students fluent in a language other than English to demonstrate their level of proficiency and earn high school credits. Kudos to all students who participated!

We ended the week with a visit from author Dr. Marc Aronson, who spoke with our students about nonfiction writing, and then held workshops with our staff on how to incorporate engaging nonfiction texts in their classes. Dr. Aronson’s speaking aims to inspire young people to ask thoughtful questions and discover new answers in the world around them. Our students enjoyed learning about Dr. Aronson, his work, and his passion for history, writing, and understanding our world. You can learn more about Dr. Aronson at his website: www.marcaronson.com, and I encourage you to ask your student what they thought of his message!

I hope you enjoyed your weekend,

Drew Campbell

All of our 8th grade students had an amazing experience participating in Finance Park. Students were given a "real life" job and family status and learned to budget and manage their money and resources in a hands on interactive experience.

Be sure to ask your 8th graders what they learned through this experience. A special thank you goes out to our social studies department, staff and parent volunteers for making this opportunity possible for our kids.

The FCPS Family Vision Group (FVG) is preparing for its second year of the FCPS Family Connection Group (FCG) initiative. We are looking for at least two parents to represent Key MS on the Family Vision Group.

This program aims to foster a collaborative environment where families can engage directly with Dr. Michelle Reid, the Superintendent of FCPS, on issues that impact student success. The FCPS FVG aims to bring diverse communities together to discuss how to achieve the goals of the 2023-2030 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes excellence, equity, and opportunity for all students.

The FCPS FVG also seeks to recognize and strengthen the positive impact of community engagement on student achievement. Bi-monthly meetings from August 2024 - May 2025 will ensure consistent school representation and encourage open communication through Q&A sessions and feedback opportunities to help participants inform other families at their schools.

Key responsibilities of the FCPS FCG Include:

  • Actively participate in the exchange of information and perspectives.
  • Commit to pursuing the interest of every student in FCPS.
  • Regularly attend FCPS FVG meetings.
  • Serve as an ambassador to your school community by sharing information between families and the superintendent.
  • Support the superintendent's outreach efforts to engage families and community members.

The FVG seeks committed family members/caregivers who reflect the diverse FCPS student community, from Pre-K through post-secondary education. If you would like to be part of this effort, please submit your application using the following link: https://forms.gle/qQybjhykWHMUMQ1T7.  If approved, you will receive further information on the meetings' dates, times, and locations.

Thank you for your continued support of our mission to improve the educational experience for each FCPS student! By working together, we can cultivate a welcoming school community where every family feels empowered and has a voice.

Importance of Strong Attendance Habits

Student Testing

The Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) require schools to provide reading and mathematics screening tests for all students in grades 6-8. These assessments also fulfill a requirement for reading and mathematics growth assessments under the Virginia Assessment Program (VAP). Test results help families and teachers know how to support each student’s learning and development. The Academic Screening, Growth, and Diagnostic Tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/academic-screening-growth-and-diagnostic-tests) provides more information on these tests.

  • iReady Reading - all students scheduled to take the spring reading SOL
  • MAP Growth MAP – all students scheduled to take a spring math SOL

Middle school teachers assess all grade 6-8 middle school students with iReady Reading and MAP Growth MAP in fall, winter, and spring. Tests are delivered within the classroom instructional block. Teachers set specific testing dates for each class. General timing for required screening and growth is available on the Grade Level Tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/academics/student-tests-assessments/grade-level-tests).

Based on academic screening results, some students may require a reading plan or math intervention plan. Some students may require additional diagnostic tests to help teachers determine specific areas for support. If you have questions about academic screening, growth, or diagnostic tests, please contact your student’s teacher or Danielle Danz, [email protected], the school's test coordinator

Key Middle School Families

Important Dates:

  • September 26: Thomas Jefferson HS for Science and Technology Family Night

Let's all be kind to one another.

Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

This week, we conducted our first lockdown drill of the school year. These drills are important exercises for students and staff to practice emergency procedures in the very unlikely event of a situation that would require us to go into lockdown. I’m proud of our students and staff for taking this drill seriously. FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.

Safety and security continue to be of the utmost importance at Key MS, and our staff is committed to ensuring our school is a safe place. We have staff supervising our halls and common spaces throughout the day, and our security team makes regular rounds of the building.  Our team works to ensure all students are where they are supposed to be and behaving in accordance with the SR&R. To support our security measures, please talk to your students about the importance of being in class on time, avoiding negative social media interactions, and staying away from negative behaviors like vaping or cutting class. Feel free to reach out to your student’s counselor or administrator if you would like resources to support these conversations!

If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline.

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Importance of Strong Attendance Habits

September is Attendance Awareness Month. Some of the ways parents can help their children create healthy routines and a habit of getting to school on time every day include:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? View this morning checklist, available in English or Spanish.)
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

New Attendance Reporting Feature Launching in ParentVUE for 2024-25 School Year

FCPS is excited to announce an important update beginning with the start of the 2024-25 school year. Parents and caregivers will have the option to submit their student’s attendance directly through ParentVUE starting the first day of school, August 19, 2024.  This new feature aims to streamline the attendance reporting process and enhance communication between parents and schools. This change will make it more convenient for parents and schools to manage students' attendance while ensuring the highest level of security.

ParentVUE offers a more secure and reliable platform for managing students' attendance information.  ParentVUE will replace the current Attendance Forms, which will be discontinued at the end of the 2023-24 school year.

Key Middle School Families Lockdown Drill

Dear Key Middle School Parents/Guardians,

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Safety Drills

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

⚠️ Know Our Security Terms

FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.

If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.

Superintendent's Family Connection Group

Invitation to Apply

ParentVUE access and assistance will be provided during Back-to-School events.
